Message from the Fire Commissioners and the Chief:
We have all been touched by these hard economic times and, over the past years, the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) has seen a decrease in dues/ donations. We have been working diligently on cutting operating expenses, but have reached the point were further cuts would affect the quality of emergency services.
The NVFD is a non-profit organization that serves the Nokomis, Laurel, South Osprey, and all of Casey Key. The benefits to having a volunteer fire department are numerous, including a significant cost savings to the residents of the area served by the NVFD. Unfortunately, only 45% of homeowners paid their dues for fiscal year 2008-09.
Due to the decreased participation in our annual dues, the Sarasota County Budget Task Force, on their own, recommended to the Sarasota County Commissioners that a Municipal Service Taxing Unit (MSTU) be established. Fire service would then be an additional TAX added to your annual property tax bill and is estimated to be three times greater than the current dues. We do not want this to become another tax burden on the residents. That is why this year it is more important than ever to support the NVFD, so we can continue to serve you as we have for the past 60 years.
Your prompt attention to this request will be a substantial savings to you.
Thank You in Advance for your Support !
