| The history of the Nokmis Volunteer Fire Department dates back
to 1949 when the Union Volunteer Fire Department was formed.
On April 1st of 1950 was the official start date of the Fire
Department. It also had a formed women's auxiliary with
T.E Labyer as the President. In October of 1950 the Fire
Department has enough money to buy 2 new fire trucks. June
1951 was to official groundbreaking of the current station we
still have now. In 1956 the worst fire to date guts the
Walker Howell Lumber Yard. 1958 the department received
it's first 2-way radio. It required the installation of
the antenna tower that is still attached to the rear of the fire
station. In 1959 the Nokomis Fire Department assisted the
City of Venice Fire Department with a fire at the Gulf Liner
Boat Company. January 4th, 1960 six firefighters were
injured in a boat explosion. 1963 the fire department got
it's first brand new pumper which has been retired since 1999.
Needing the room to house more equipment 1975 was the year the
metal building was built. 1976 the fire department gets a
new Darley Pumper. 1980 the department took delivery of
another new Darley Pumper. 1987 with the possible downfall of
the department, a group of concerned citizens got together to
rebuild the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department. That very
year came another new E-One Fire Engine. A year later it
was noted that a new Tanker truck was needed and was purchased.
It was not until 1995 that another new Fire Engine was purchase.
It was a 1995 Pierce Saber Pumper which is still in service as
the training academy pumper. 1996 fuel tanker overturns on
I-75 at the Salt Creek Bridge and burns. Nokomis Fire
Department was the first due responders and handled the incident
with the help of mutual aid fire departments. 1997 brought
a new fire truck and the purchase was a Pierce 50' TeleSquirt.
This truck allowed us the opportunity to flow water from and
elevated position. This truck is still in service.
With the beginning of the new Millennium we currently have 3
pumper trucks, 1 ladder truck, 1 tanker, 1 brush truck and 2
command vehicles to serve the people of the Nokomis Community. |
